Hey,

Good you made it this far. Tell us something about yourself and what you hope for with this open source project.

...because I had been with Duolingo for years and learned Spanish from scratch -

Immersion was a big part of the learning process and now they have chosen to go a different route.

I miss translations; they "stretched" the learning process to the next level - understanding  sentences in context...

I know how you feel.

I mainly used Duolingo to help teach German students English. It was also very useful for getting stuff translated and now most of the documents we were working on are gone.

More later!

Hi,

actually I'm mainly here because the idea for the name CommuniCATs has been stolen from my business kommunikatz (http://kommunikatz.wordpress.com - sorry, most of the contents are in german). The use of the name is ok with me, I gave my permission :)

Probably I can't help much with the CommuniCATs project, since I'm not a programmer. Every now and then I translate project-related texts from english into german. I'm also interrested in accessibility issues. I'm blind myself and I'd like to help making CommuniCATs accessible to people like me. Duolingo had it's troubles in that respect.

regards

Lea

I just started using Duolingo again after a pretty long time, and I was disappointed to see that they'd dropped the immersion feature. I found Gary's link in a comment thread about on Duolingo, and here I am.

I'm a graphic designer turned JavaScript developer, so I thought my skills might be of use for something like this. :)

Hi there, I hope this website is still active. I’ve found a link in a Duolingo discussion after finding out that the immersion tool doesn’t exist anymore.

I am here to find help for translating a homepage into Arabic. Since I’m planning to make a indie film project (7liars.jimdofree.com) in Berlin Neukölln, would like to introduce that homepage to some arabic locals. Since I don’t know Arabic, I hope, I find something here.

We're still here

von Gary Evans -

Hi Timo,

Yes it's possible to make use of FoundCAT to translate from German into Arabic, especially if you have a crowd of people willing to contribute time to translating and proofreading.

I've made a start using Google Translate here:

https://foundcat.bluecloud.academy/translate/german-source-texts/filmarche/ar/?resource_link_id=None

What do you think?

Gary

Hi Gary,

Thank you! That is very kind of you. But I had already prepared a document for translating for the whole website and I corrected some typos there as well.

It’s here:

https://foundcat.bluecloud.academy/translate/german-source-texts/homepage-des-indie-filmprojekts-7-liars/ar/?resource_link_id=None

Unfortunately, I can’t read Arabic, so I don’t have the chance to proof it. But I hope to find people, who can translate. I’ve already send some emails ...

Good to know, there is a machine translation. You used that button, right? I’ve tried it out and it looks quite similar to your translation. :)

Thank you. You’re program is a really nice idea. I hope people will sign up.

Best,

Tom

MT API

von Gary Evans -

Hi Timo,

Great to see you've got going on this project. I copied the German text into the Google Translate MT as it offers German - Arabic. I need to integrate more machine translation engines into FoundCAT. I've put up a feature request on GitLab for this here:

https://gitlab.com/FoundCAT/FoundCAT/issues/1

I have the API key for DeepL Pro, and this also needs to be integrated into FoundCAT (although it currently has a limited offer of language combinations).

Cheers,

Gary

Hi!

I'm here, because Mr. Evans made me do it.

But I enjoy partaking in translations to find out about my limitations

of the (english) language and to further my knowledge of it.

Hi there,

I am a Chinese postgraduate student majoring CAT. I developed BasicCAT, which is a open source desktop CAT tool.

I came across FoundCAT when searching open source CAT. The idea of helping students to learn is similar to what I did for my Bachelor's paper which is a translation teaching platform based on CAT.

I am just curious about how exactly FoundCAT helps students learn.

Hi Lihang Xu,

cool! Nice to see your interest in FoundCAT. Can we try BasicCAT and/or read your paper?

FoundCAT helps people learn by translating sentences as best as they can. Some of these translations will of course not be perfect. Then others can come along and change the translation to something better. The original translator then gets notified per e-mail and learns from the improvement.

That's the basics. We also have comments so people can chat about the changes, improvement categories so people can see what kind of improvement it is, users can upload their own texts, a glossary, machine translation, moodle for forum and private messages, etc.

Do you have other questions?

Regards,

Lexi

BasicCAT is available here. But my bachelor's paper is about another translation teaching platform. The paper can be accessed on researchgate. The idea of letting students write down their notes and comment with each other is just like FoundCAT's.

Oh oops, I assumed it was online/browser-based as well so I didn't even think of looking at "Download". So BasicCAT is not multi-user, right?

I've taken a quick look at your paper, thanks for uploading it :-) However I wasn't immediately able to see which translation teaching platform it's about. Is it released under a free license? Do you have a link?

Are you interestest in working together in some way?

Re: Tell us why you're here

BasicCAT is a desktop app and users can have shared translation memory and term bases by running a server program.  Collaboration is also possible using git and GitHub just like the way OmegaT does.

The teaching platform(source) is discontinued as I am not a translation teacher who has the need. There are a few commercial translation teaching platforms in China. The first one only has a Chinese interface.

They all have functions like peer review, error classification and automatic scoring, but not integrated with a CAT environment.

Nihao Lihang Xu,

I took the idea from Duolingo Immersion which was developed to help people learn to translate as part of their language learning platform. I use it in class to help students understand the process of translating (I am a translator as well as a teacher).

I hope this helps!

Kind regards,

Gary

Translating is a good way to learn a language. Many textbooks have translation exercises.

When I was studying English, sometimes I think I understand a sentence, but when I started translating, I had to focus on every word and was able to have a deep understanding.

Our teacher will let us speak out our translation in front of everyone and make comments and suggestions to the translation. I think moving this process online is a very meaningful act.
